I know what you mean, my wallet’s been feeling a little on the light side these days too. Times are tough. Just dog eat dog! I was thinking the other day about some ideas to augment shoppers into my business and what I came up with I think might work for you too. I was recalling how when I was a child and my mom was on her own with me in my brothers. In a very huge city. The weather would push us into a department store during the Christmas. It might have been Macy’s, I’m not sure. So they would have these amazing train displays there. You had to wait because there were so many kids but when kids were dragged away by impatient parents get your go to press the button that made one of the many trains chug around the setup. What a great time we had there! Bigger than the apartment we packed in! As a kid you were just captivated by the world of imagination while you were in front of that track.
And here’s the thing, even though my mom didn’t have a lot money and always came in with the determination of never spending a nickel, by the end of the day it seemed like we inevitably ended up leaving with some little toy, even if it was just a hot pretzel from one the street venders. So here’s the thought I had:
Experiment with g size model railroad setups in the display window of the store:
Toy retailers have known this for a long time and hardware stores have found this a natural fit since customers can buy the accessories and kits for model railroading all right there. But I think other types of establishments could really increase revenue by having a toy locomotive railroad, especially big g scale trains and tracks. Any store with a front window that looks onto a widely used walk way like in a commercial area could really draw parents and their kids in. You don’t really need to be a business that is in any way train related. A pediatrician’s hospital might just have a g gauge display to keep the kids busy while they waited to see the doctor or for prescriptions. Kids would drag their parents into the establishment and many parents would have great trouble leaving without buying their kids a little train at least. The toy train babysitter would allow the relieved parents to attend to their own desires. The increased business would be well worth the drawbacks in terms of space, start up costs and maintenance. Actually, wherever parents and children are forced to sit around would be helped from such an addition. This is sure to make for an insurance plan against bad times.
Consider a model train design for your Bed and Breakfast and Restaurant:
This would be well suited for that B & B you’ve always planned on. Well what better way to help create a cool personalized experience than to add a g scale model railroad design to your Bed and Breakfast? Imagine having a locomotive along the inside of the bar taking customers their wine and sandwiches. Customers would really get a kick out of watching the trains humming around them. You could increase your revenues by having train related trinkets and toys. If you have a local tourist mecca that is western related you could create a tie-in to this site. Think of the American history tie-ins in your local area.
Yeah, times are rough. Now’s the time to act decisively and creatively to better your business not wait passively while you are tossed by the waves of change. A distinctive business personality is sure to help you succeed in these hard economic times. I’ve only touched the surface. Bring to mind a bar where your drinks are delivered to the end of the counter by a Budweiser decorated trolley or…
