Watching bonsai grow and shaping them into amazing sculptures is an absorbing and extremely rewarding hobby. Growing bonsai is not an expensive pastime with only a few tools being required, but a magnificant bonsai tree can be more of a statement in your home than many an expensive ornament. A bonsai is a living ornament.

Bonsai Trees are container planted trees that are grown to be a miniature of of the full sized tree. Bonsai trees are grown from almost any perennial woody stemmed trees and shrubs that produce branches and is able to develop in miniature through container confinement with the assistance of crown and root pruning.

Bonsai can be developed from seed, young shoots lifted from the countryside, (please have regard for any laws regarding taking wild plants in your region), or can be ordered as mature planted bonsai. Although growing bonsai trees from seeds is the slowest route, but you do have maximum control of how your bonsai tree will develop.

Bonsai trees are grown in special pots that not only restrict root development, but also further enhance the look of your bonsai. Special soils are available that give you the ideal environment for your bonsai to develop.

Many specialist techniques are employed to sculpt and give character to your bonsai including leaf trimming, wiring branches, grafting on other plants, short term dwarfing and deadwood, (a process used to age the bark). Only a few specialist tools are required to shape bonsai, and these are readily available cheaply. All that you need to get started can be easily bought from a bonsai nursery.

Bonsai trees can be had as indoor and outdoor varieties, some bonsai are improved if they are left outdoors during warmer summer months and grown inside in the winter months.
